The day that I met my first daughter was the best day of my life. True, I have had really awesome days since then. Also true: I adore my kiddos equally. But there is something so amazingly intense about the first. It isn’t a different love, it’s just a sprinkle on the top.
This girl is everything I could have ever dreamed she would be at sixteen: witty, authentic, silly, compassionate, fiery, convicted, loyal. She is a rainbow baby, born after the saddest loss. She doesn’t think there is anything she can’t do, and I am daily thankful for her reminding me of that indomitable spirit that lives in young people. Some days I channel my inner Emma and get shiz done. I find her inspiring and adorable. She is the coolest.
I will never not be deeply, painfully grateful that she made me a mom. It’s the job that I always wanted, the job that I am most thankful for. Happy birthday, Emma Kate.
